5) Midwest Master Class
Earlier this year, I was a judge for City and Regional Magazine Association’s “Writer of the Year” award. (When I signed up, I didn’t know we would have to read 125 feature stories…) In the end, we were unanimous in picking Catherine Elton, whose work was compelling, complex and consistent. Another story I loved was Archer Parquette’s profile of Wisconsin comedian Charlie Berens, whose helpful explanations of Midwest culture should be required viewing for locals and transplants alike.
